Agriculture

The BLCF is a good way for donors to increase opportunities for smallholder farmers. As such, almost a third of total funds were allocated to this sector - the lion share of which was allocated across Africa. Agricultural investments spanned more than 15 African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Ghana.

Projects are grouped into four sub themes. Value Chain Linkages provide win-win outcomes for all parties such as larger companies achieving security of supply and smallholders get better access markets and technical support. Niche Products (fair trade, etc) projects are characterised by smallholders becoming directly involved in the supply chain. Value of Intermediaries consists of projects demonstrating how large and small organisations such as NGOs and specialist consultancies can add value. Finally, the Accreditation sub-theme shows how smallholders can access new markets through the contribution of capacity building organisations piloting farmers and suppliers through a certification process.
